Ordover Gallery in Solana beach

I enjoyed going to the Ordover Gallery in Solana Beach. I enjoyed the artist’s work but especially liked Christopher Burkett. His views on nature and how he set up his shots were incredible. I liked the way he framed his shots.  The way he capture the mood of the picture was also a big plus.

Ordover Gallery at the San Diego Natural History Museum

The Ordover Gallery In the San Diego Natural History Museum was interesting. One artist that had a lot of work present was Ralph Lee Hopkins. I liked how his photographs involved some sort of action. Whether it be Polar Bears running around or something as simple as a penguin waddling around,  most of his shots involved some sort of action sequence that could be pieced together by our own imagination.

Depressed is what I felt when I walked into the Musuem of Photographic Arts. When I  saw some of the photographs involving kids who lack the proper nutrition made me depressed. Seeing the photos of people living in less then satisfactory conditions makes me appreciate the things that I am able to enjoy in life such as having a roof over my head and getting the appropriate amounts of nutrients.  The photos represent what it is like in countries outside North America that must deal with poverty on a daily basis.

Book Idea

For my final project, I plan on taking photos of my trip to Boston, MA. I am going to try an focus on more nature and less commercial areas if possible. I think that society has overdeveloped areas; especially San Diego, CA. Land and Brush don’t really exist in San Diego, Ca like they do in Northern California and other areas where commercial development hasn’t taken over.

James Nachtwey

Posted in My Thoughts on October 6, 2009 by Mike Mcclarren

I thought the images James Nachtwey produced over his career were very disturbing. It’s hard to imagine a society that kills off its own kind in order to survive. Neighbors killing neighbors. Children being held in concentrtion camps, genocide. The images produced a horrifying image of third world countries in my mind. I can only imagine living in a country or even a town were everybody is out to kill me. One false step and you might loose your leg due to a mine going off. I don’t think people realize how the world really is. People feel safe and comfortable in their current surroundings but when they compare their current situation with what’s going on in other countries such as Bulgaria, Nicaragua and other third world countries, they don’t have it bad at all.  The images of the world trade center also reminded me of the devastation that occurred on US soil back on September 11, 2001.  Thousands of people died on this day, and americans will never forget those who have fallen.

I thought Jim Brandenburg’s  90 journey in the woods, produced some amazing photo’s. I especially like the photographs that involved the wolfs. Going out in the wilderness for 90 days with the goal of shooting one photo; per day  is something that i think  separates the good photographers from the great photographers. The ability to know when to take a shot or pass on one is something you don’t learn overnight. To be able to quickly set up a good shot and have the outcome look great takes a lot of time and dedication to the art of photography.
