I thought Jim Brandenburg’s  90 journey in the woods, produced some amazing photo’s. I especially like the photographs that involved the wolfs. Going out in the wilderness for 90 days with the goal of shooting one photo; per day  is something that i think  separates the good photographers from the great photographers. The ability to know when to take a shot or pass on one is something you don’t learn overnight. To be able to quickly set up a good shot and have the outcome look great takes a lot of time and dedication to the art of photography.

Sally Mann

sallyI thought sally mann’s ways of taking photographs seemed a little too time consuming for my taste, yet the pictures that were were produced were interesting to say the least. I wonder why she choses to stick with old traditional ways of photography rather then switch to digital. Yes, there is  fulfilling component that one probably gets from produced photos using chemicals and film, but at the same time, i feel creativity is limited because you are only to take a single shot and can’t change its resolution, color, mistakes made during the processing, etc.

Today I used camera raw to modify this picture of balboa park.  Once completed, I transfered it over to Photoshop to tweak it a little more and optimize it.

Rick Smolan

I was impreesed with the way Rick’s career moved along. It was as if everything he did turned to gold for him. From photographing the opera lady to creating the life in australia book, when nobody believed he would suceed, sure enough he did. I thought the connections he made with various people was impressive. It’s not everyday that you get to call up a prime minister or a governor. He started small and worked his was up to something bigger, something more exciting.

Some of the shots he had taken, i only wonder how long he waited in that one place for the perfect shot. I thought the way he framed his shots was nicely done. I also find it interesting that he decided to build a home in the middle of the woods; right where his photography first started. He surrounded himself with countless photo opportunities by building his house where he did.
